To promote Africa that wins, the AfDB offers an annual media prize


The African Development Bank offers the annual African Media Award to promote more balanced media coverage of the continent and its achievements. To achieve this, it has partnered with AllAfrica Media and African financial institutions

The President of the African Development Bank Group, Akinwumi Adesina, announced the creation of an annual media award to recognize and support African journalists and correspondents in a speech at the AllAfrica Media Summit of African Media Leaders in Nairobi on Thursday, May 9. and media that report on Africa’s achievements and progress.

“Africa,” he said, “must shape its own story and not depend on what others think of it or the perspectives they prefer to share about it, its achievements and the opportunities it offers… Positive stories about investment opportunities in Africa needs to be well highlighted because unfortunately they don’t get enough coverage, if at all, in the Western media.”

Support should be sought from African financial institutions

He also proposed that the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and all regional financial institutions pool resources to support the creation of a globally recognized African media company that will place news from Africa to the world.

Themed ‘Rethinking African Media in Times of Profound Change’, the summit brings together over 300 African media owners and operators, government officials, business leaders, academics, civil society advocates and development partners to discuss media operations and the critical role they must play in shaping the future Africa.

“The media has a key role to play by being fair, objective, inquisitive, investigative, yes, but also catalysts for development and promoting positive news about successes, achievements and tangible achievements in Africa,” the AfDB president continues.

Mr. Adesina also called on development institutions in Africa to create a common repository of verified and standardized stories, videos and content to facilitate the compilation and writing of articles on what is going well in Africa.

He also promised that the African Development Bank, in collaboration with its partners and African financial institutions, will participate in the creation of scholarships for African journalists and correspondents to contribute to the development and capacity building of journalists and correspondents working in Africa.
