Pro-Palestinian demonstrations at universities: the beginning of the occupation of the UGent building by students (PHOTO)

UGent decided not to act on its students’ requests, explaining that the university “will not generalize” for all institutions in the country. “We analyze our partners individually” to determine whether or not serious human rights violations are taking place, UGent chairman Geert Bourgeois argued on Saturday. There are Israeli universities that are far from these practices, “and we have to make sure to keep in touch,” he concluded.

Since their demands were not heard, the activists intend to occupy the Ufo building until Wednesday. Their action is supported by more than 100 university employees, including professors, who sent an open letter to the board and Rector Rik Van de Walle on Sunday.

Around a hundred students began occupying the UGent building on Monday afternoon.

UGent did not allow the occupation, but agreements were made with the activists. For example, they are not allowed to move furniture or cause damage within the building, they must hire their own caretakers, and in the event of violence, the police will immediately intervene. Activists brought tents to spend the night in the building and put up posters with slogans such as “Stop the lies, cut all ties.”
