Born overseas: Study the opportunity gaps

Those who stay and those who leave do not have the same options

There is a huge gap in career opportunities between those who left and those who stayed overseas. If this connection between interregional mobility and greater opportunities is also found in mainland France, the difference between mobile and non-mobile is much more pronounced overseas. This is explained by a double penalty for sedentary workers: a lower degree level (selection effect), but also for the same degree level, gap in professional opportunities, especially in the Antilles.

Those who immigrated, on the other hand, benefit on average from a situation that is close to that of the residents of the metropolis. Of comparable social origin, natives who immigrated to France are almost as likely to have higher education as metropolitan residentsand even have slightly higher employment rates. However, the situation is more contrasting when it comes to access to leadership: while there is almost no difference between metropolitan residents and Réunion natives, emigrants with comparable social origins, the executive rate among native Antillean emigrants is 30% lower than that of metropolitan residents of the same social background.
