Annie De Poortere’s disappearance: Annie De Poortere’s ex-husband leaves prison with an electronic bracelet

On Saturday, during construction work carried out near the place where the missing woman lived, human remains were discovered. Several elements indicated that these were the remains of Annie De Poortere, who disappeared in 1994 when she was 48 years old. After the discovery of the bones, the investigating judge was contacted.

Disappearance of Annie De Poortere: her ex-partner will appear before the House of Commons on Friday

The ex-husband, now aged 78, was arrested and questioned. The woman’s relatives were told the man admitted burying the body but denied killing Ms De Poortere.

The investigation must reveal what his role was in the victim’s death, said the prosecution, which gave no further details.

On Tuesday, the investigating judge decided to detain the man and monitor him electronically. On Friday, he will appear in front of the meeting hall of the Ghent council, but his participation has not yet been decided. The suspect can be represented by his lawyer. The hearing will be held behind closed doors.

An autopsy will be performed on the victim’s remains on Thursday, but the prosecution will not release any details about the investigation at this time. The court has until November 12 to bring the suspect to trial because of the recent change in the statute of limitations for murder from 20 to 30 years.
