iPhone: how Apple helps you protect your children (Report)

Did you know that Apple used to offer sessions open to everyone to better understand its products and services? Called “Today at Apple,” these workshops can be accessed at an Apple Store or online. The first 30 minutes are free.

While the government is preparing a law aimed at limiting children’s exposure to screens, we attended the meeting “Your Kids and Their Devices”educational workshop open to everyone, parents and children.

Apple’s point is not to give a moralizing speech, but to introduce people to the tools available in the iPhone to support parents and children in intelligent use of the world’s best-selling phone. And to allow parents to work with their children to monitor exposure to screens and digital tools. Reporting.

Limit but communicate

Make an appointment at the Apple Store on the Champs-Elysées and, like any Apple customer, take part in the workshop “Your Kids and Their Devices”. This lesson focuses on features available in iOS (and iPadOS) that help parents protect their children. They focus on two aspects: screen time and more advanced settings.

The idea is based on the configuration carried out with pedagogy in the company of the child. First, it focuses on limiting screen time. iOS first lets you set a daily screen time limit. If parents wish to restrict usage to only certain apps, this option is also available for individual apps or groups of apps.

If no study shows the harmful effects of screens on the eyes of adults, when it comes to children, it’s a completely different story. In order to avoid premature deterioration of your children’s vision, Apple offers the function “Screen Distance” which sends a visual alert when the child is too close to the screen.

On the “communication” side, developers have increased functionality. So this option allows you to blur shocking photos (especially “nude”) received in iMessage or Airdrop. It is also possible lock all communication apps outside of screen time, in case your child procrastinates in the evening to send messages to his friends with consequences for the quality of sleep. Again, these options are available on iMessage, FaceTime or Phone. In the same vein, a filter can be activated on Apple Music to filter out explicit content.

Finally, iOS includes a filter for online content. Parents can block access to adult sites or create a list of websites that a child can access.

At the end of April, the State Secretary for the City and Citizenship, Sabrina Agresti-Roubache, said that parents “the right to search your child’s phone”. A declaration that brought to the surface the issue of the private life of minors, already regulated by law. No, parents cannot invade their child’s privacy. On the other hand, they can support them in using technology.

There are also features for iPhone users to enable this surveillance. In addition to the settings described above, parents can also manage app permissions to limit the targeting and use of their children’s data. The option even lets you automatically detect age-appropriate apps and services.

App Store purchases may also be subject to restrictions. However, this does not mean blocking everything. The Shared Purchases feature allows, for example, a parent with an iPhone to allow access to their apps purchased at Family sharing (we will return to this later). The child can also request to purchase and install the app : the parent then has 48 hours to accept or decline the payment.

The more intrusive “Location Sharing” feature allows you to track (in real time or for a selected amount of time) the location of the iPhone your toddler is using.

Finally, isolation mode blocks all access to phone data if a child is believed to be a victim of a cyber attack.

If the parent has an iPhone, can create a child account directly from Family Sharing, on your iCloud account. Here it provides access to purchases, shares its services (such as Apple Music) or manages location. This does not prevent him from configuring all other settings from the child’s iPhone.

How to make sure your toddler doesn’t cross the line? By locking the features enabled during the initial installation. for that Apple offers a four-digit code, different from the unlock code (it would be that simple). This code must be complex for the child, but at the same time easy to remember for the parent. In case of forgetting, a forced recovery is really necessary. The uninitiated will then have to go through the Apple Assistant or go to the Genius Bar in the Apple Store.

This code must be filled in modification of the blocking code, an option available in privacy settings. Everything is clear ? Good news, your children will soon be more protected. Bad news, they’ll soon hate you too.
