What salary after engineering school group 1, 2 or 3?

How much will you earn once you graduate? This question is answered (in particular) by the WTW (Business Insurance) 2023 study based on the compensation of 12,278 young executives. All the managers in question have at least two years of experience and their diplomas range from bac + 2 to bac + 5. What about major engineering schools? Overall, their graduates receive a median salary of €42,000 gross per year, the same as university master’s degree holders. Or 11,000 euros more than those with BTS. A significant gap, especially if we calculate it on a career scale (without inflation and constant purchasing power and without possible career advancement). Over a career of 42.5 years, this difference represents a salary surplus of 467,500 euros. However, WTW optimized the study by improving its disaggregation: in fact, the company distinguished three groups within these schools based on the importance of the rewards obtained by their graduates. Within engineering schools, some schools belong to group 1 (Polytechnique, CentraleSupélec, etc.). Others in group 2 (Insa Lyon, UTC…) and others in group 3 (UTT, ECPM, ESIEE…).

What is the difference between group 1 and 2?

For Group 1 business schools, young graduate engineers receive €43,500 in median annual salary, those from Group 2 schools receive €41,500 and those in Group 3 receive €40,500. At first glance, minor differences. But here it is: on the career scale, the €2,000 more that a group 1 school brings compared to a group 2 school is a difference of €85,000 (and again, without taking into account inflation or possible career progression). The difference is even more pronounced between a school in group 1 and a school in group 3: no less than 127,500 euros for the whole career (without inflation and career progression), knowing that this difference can further increase with the frequent access of graduates from the school of group 1 to leadership positions.

Salary alone is no longer enough

However, many companies emphasize benefits other than salary to retain their young recruits. Therefore, for their preservation, the WTW study states that “85% of companies have implemented an internal development strategy (training, mobility), 77% have implemented a hybrid model (face-to-face/teleworking) as part of a flexibility policy, and 62% have developed an onboarding strategy (we welcome a young recruit, editor’s note)”. Important non-wage benefits that should not overshadow other expectations, such as those related to environmental commitment or the employer’s pursuit of meaning.
